Greetings, everyone.

I was a member of the original 104th Engineers that assembled at Ft. Meade, Maryland in the fall of 1966, then went to Vietnam via troopship (the S.S. Darby) out of Oakland Dec. 26th, 1966. Our Captain was Ernest Boyer, from Salt Lake City, and our !st Sargeant was Wayne Cantwell (now deceased), the youngest E-8 in the U.S. Army at that time. One of our platoon Sargeants was guy Levingston who will be at the reunion. I'm still working on attending. Anybody out there part of this or need more history. I have a good memory, cosidering.....

Didn't get a chance to get short. Wound up with a three week drop in Aug of 69 and flew home on military transport. They told us we would have a steak dinner aboard as soon as we cleared Vietnamese air space; we were treated to cold "C's" on account of the refrigeration was down in the Phillipines. A likely story. Flew to Japan and then to the Manila and on to SeaTac where we were turned loose to find our way home. Grabbed a flight to the big apple and a taxi to Lt Crocamos place in Jersey City and then a bus ride to North Jersey and into the loving arms of my family. Had no real grief with any of the civilians that I had to deal with on the trip, as a matter of fact, I don't recall any real comments good or bad. Except of course my brother who was upset that he had to take time from his girlfriend (now his wife) to come and pick me up from the bus stop. My family was spending the summer at our lake house and I had to locate my car keys and drive up there. Mom and Dad almost had a heart attack as they weren't expecting me and I only got to call them after I got home. At least they had an hour notice before I popped in and promptly "crashed" for about 12 hours as I was so stoked from the trip I hadn't gotten any sleep. The next morning we all sat around the breakfast table out on the porch and I was able to begin my transition back to normalcy. But not until after the starter cannon launched the sailboat race. My reaction of course to the unexpected blast was to immediately dive under the table much to the consternation of all assembled, myself included.
It took me a couple of weeks to get used to the 80 degree temps., I spent most of my time sitting around bundled up against the cold. It's hard to explain to people that it takes a while to acclimate from 110 to 80 or less. Kind of like how I remember the Vietnamese freezing to death at 70 degrees during the monsoon rains.
Wish I had kept a "morning report" from the units I belonged to it would have made finding some of you guys so much easier. And yes, I did manage to find Crocamo after all these years by way of his son. Hopefully both he and I will be at the 2008 reunion. Now if I can only find some of my memorabilia. Engineers never throw anything out. My wife has a very hard time accepting this reality and it is a bone of contention in our lives but hey, everyone has at least a few faults.

We hope you're all planning on coming to the 2009 Reunion (July 23-26, 2009). If you've just found this web site and somehow don't know what we're talking about, the reunion website is at "www.20thEngineerBrigadeReunion.com" The room block at the first hotel is already full, but there are still rooms at the Holiday Inn directly next door - we're talking a couple of steps here.... If you haven't already done so, please, pop us an email or snail mail and help us with our count. Col. Rick Kaiser, current Commanding Officer of the 20th Combat Engineer Brigade (Airborne), out of Ft. Bragg, NC, will be our keynote speaker. If you have any question, feel free to call either of us at 803/622-1194 or 803/528-7363.
It'll be here before we know it!
Welcome home

Hello Guys: I was at HHC 20th - Personnel from June 69 to Aug 70. Kept in touch with a few guys but have lost touch with many more. I was in personnel and if you left Vietnam in the above time frame it was my distinct honor to have prepared your physical plane ticket home, and if you got a drop of from one to seven days for no apparant reason...well that was me too!
Cheers to all.

Hi guys, I was with the 67th Engineer co (DT) and went to Vietnam on The Darby with the 104th leaving Oakland 12/26/66. We assembled in Ft. Campbell, KY and went as a unit like the 104th. We were stationed in Cu Chi, TayNinh, Bearcat, BlackHorse, BaRia, and Dong Tam during my 13 month tour. We lost two of our people to a landmine just outside Blackhorse on august 30, 1967. May the memory of Lt Mundy and Spec 4 Harvie Smith live forever.
